Once upon a Bad Christmas

Chapter 35

Zhengri sat in the back seat of the vehicle, extremely nervous. This is his crush! Even if he is a man already in his late thirties in this life and late sixties in his last life, he still felt like a young boy.

The memory of taking her first time and being with her for an entire night was so beautiful, now here she is!

Decades he had loved this woman more than a hundred years and here she is, right beside him.

Zhengri turned his head to steal a glance at her side profile and came in contact with golden phoenix eyes glaring at him before they were closed shut. Zhengri was stunned, was this his son?

Was he not a baby?

Why did he give him such a look?

“Vanity, is this…?”

“My son. Tian Kuo with surname Mi.”

“Vast sky,” Zhengri murmured. “Yes, as the first he must have such a name.”

He heard her say while she bent her head to look down at the child.

Luckily he and his two brothers had returned to the countryside. He had been here three days trying to figure out some things when in frustration he had taken a walk. As he did he arrived here and met the wife of the Pan family and a few others.

After a small discussion he saw someone arrive in a sleek vehicle to inform them that young miss Mi was back.

Seeing their shock he had asked them to inform her and will meet in another location nearby.

By the way of course Zhengri had called a car to drive him and informed his brothers.

He was extremely excited because he was finally by her side. “We will take a helicopter to the next location.”

“I will follow your lead,” Zhengri said softly, his outward look aloof but inward he was extremely excited. “You came at a bad time, we are doing a muster to collect the cattle, goats and sheep for later slaughter.”

“Not for sale?” Zhengri asked, slightly puzzled.

“Some will be sold but most will be slaughtered, processed and stored in various ways for later.” Zhengri heard Vanity say, while fixing herself and placing the baby on her shoulder to be burped. The baby is a little over a month old but he is chubby and looked more like a three month old, with a full head of dark hair. His white skin was stark against the almond tone of his Blasian mother. If the two did not possess the same golden eyes and slightly detached look many would doubt she had given birth to him.

Zhengri sighed softly wanting to question Vanity some more but did not dare. “I know our situation, the child is yours and we are married but our meet was a bit chaotic and so was our marriage. That night, I was clearly not myself and neither were you.”

She said softly, Zhengri clenched his hands into fists. She was right, though he could clearly remember how they created their son, the part where they were married was still vague. He just knew that there was a marriage certificate with both their names and a ring on their finger.

“Vanity I—”

“Miss we have arrived.” the door was opened from her side and a handsome young man appeared, he wore a cowboy hat, long sleeved button down with the Mi family crest, a pair of dark blue jeans neither too loose nor tight and cowboy boots.

Zhengri looking at him frowned especially when he reached out for his son.

“Curren, how is everything so far?”

“Young miss Mi the investigation is underway, the animals have been settled, we just need you to observe them and select those for sale and the rest to be kept.”

“Alright, let us head to the helicopter,” Zhengri watched her step out and walked forward, the man following close behind holding his son but could do nothing but remain silent.

Zhengri and Vanity are neighbours but clearly they were unfamiliar even though they also are married. Both are wealthy, both have good backgrounds even though the Mi family have fallen and she is alone, she still had support.

If he dared to rush things it all might back fire.

Zhengri followed, his mind churning. He knew that this Curren worked for his wife, but as her husband he wanted to hold his son not watch another man do it. Still even if he was dissatisfied Zhengri had to bow his head for now or suffer the consequences if he dared to show objection.

As they approached the helicopter, the wind whipped around them, tugging at Vanity’s hair.

The helicopter blades whirred to life, creating a deafening roar. Curren, cradling the baby expertly, gestured them aboard. The interior was surprisingly plush, leather seats and polished wood. Vanity settled in, strapping herself in efficiently. Curren handed her the baby, who nestled against her, seemingly oblivious to the noise and commotion. As the doors slid closed the interior became silent.

Zhengri sat across from her, trying to decipher her expression. She was studying the baby’s face, a rare softness softening her features. He cleared his throat. “Vanity, about…that night…”

She cut him off without looking up. “It was a mistake. We both regret it. Let’s move on.”

His heart sank. He knew this wouldn’t be easy, but he hadn’t expected such brutal rejection. “A mistake that resulted in our son, Tian Kuo.” He emphasized the name, hoping to elicit some emotion from her.

Her jaw tightened. “Yes, and I will provide for him, ensure he has everything he needs, after all he is a Mi.” She said in a detached tone while teasing the baby.

The helicopter lifted off, the ground receding below. Zhengri watched her, his heart aching. He had missed her in the last life, like a fool only content to stay by her side as her lawyer seeing her every now and then, now this life he had her and it seemed he might be doomed again.

He turned his gaze from her to look down outside.

The landscape sprawled beneath them – rolling hills dotted with grazing cattle, meticulously planned fields, and the occasional villa peeking through the trees. In this part of the country, the Mi family owned a lot of land but had given up a lot over the thousand plus years of their existence.
